Why AI Data-Center Power Grid Rules Triggered Wall Street's Chip Whiplash—and Friday's Bounce

7 November 2026

The biggest story in US equities this week was the sudden repricing of the artificial intelligence infrastructure trade. After a relentless multi-quarter rally, semiconductor, server and power-equipment stocks suffered a sharp air-pocket on Thursday before staging a selective rebound on Friday led by Nvidia (+2.6%) and Micron (+4%).

At the centre of the selloff was a growing bottleneck: electricity grid capacity and local regulatory pushback against hyper-scale data centers.

What happened

Following Tuesday's elections, several state and local ballot initiatives and regulatory shifts highlighted voter resistance to rising residential utility bills and grid strain caused by massive AI data-center campuses. Investors worried that slower permitting and stricter energy rules could delay capital expenditure timelines for cloud hyperscalers in 2027. By Friday, analysts argued the 5.5% Nasdaq drop had overdone the near-term impact, noting that existing 2026–2027 GPU and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) order books remain fully committed.
