Bitcoin Recovers Toward $80,000 as Spot ETF Outflows Slow After the Binance Hack
Bitcoin has recovered toward the $80,000 level after trading near $78,500 on Tuesday, 4 November. The move came as US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw smaller outflows, a welcome change after several sessions of heavy withdrawals that followed the Binance security incident. Reports put the price around $80,000 in early trading on 5 November, but the exact level varies by data source and time of day.
What happened
US spot Bitcoin ETFs lost a combined amount that most trackers put above $1 billion over the most recent three sessions, with the largest single-day outflow of about $643 million on 30 October. The figure is not uniform across sources. One tally puts the November-to-date outflow at about $514 million over two trading days, which suggests different date ranges and data providers were used. Either way, the direction is clear: institutional money was leaving, and the pace has now slowed.
BlackRock's IBIT led the withdrawals. Smaller funds, including Bitwise's BITB and Fidelity's FBTC, recorded modest inflows, which points to selective rather than uniform selling. The broader market backdrop was also weak. Bitcoin fell below $77,000 on 3 November as a tech sell-off spread, and sentiment readings moved into fear territory.
Sentiment has also been shaped by regulatory news. The SEC extended its review of leveraged crypto ETF proposals to late November, which keeps the focus on spot products for now.
Why it matters for traders
- Flows lead price. Bitcoin has tended to follow ETF flows over the short term, so a turn from outflows to inflows would be a more meaningful signal than one day's price move.
- Security events damage confidence. The Binance incident shows how quickly a single exchange problem can spill into the whole market, through withdrawals and fund flows.
- Macro still matters. Crypto has moved with tech stocks and with rate expectations, so an improving equity tape helps the mood.
- Key levels are close together. The $76,500 to $77,500 zone has been defended repeatedly, and a break below it would re-open the downside.
What to watch
Watch whether daily ETF flows stay near flat or turn positive over the next few sessions, and whether bitcoin can reclaim $80,000 on a closing basis. Regulatory developments, including the timing of the SEC decision and progress on the market-structure legislation known as the CLARITY Act, could affect institutional appetite in the weeks ahead. Ether has been weaker than bitcoin this month, a gap traders will also track.
