Bitcoin Steadies Near $76,000 After a $1.27 Billion Liquidation Flush Tests Seven-Week Lows
Bitcoin steadied near the $76,000 mark heading into the weekend of 6–7 November after a turbulent 48 hours that saw the largest cryptocurrency drop roughly 6% from above $80,000 to a seven-week low near $75,000. The drop tracked Wall Street's steep technology selloff and triggered approximately $1.27 billion in derivatives liquidations across crypto exchanges.
More than $1.1 billion of those forced closures came from leveraged long positions caught offside when BTC lost the $78,000 support shelf.
What happened
Bitcoin had briefly reclaimed $80,000 mid-week as election uncertainty cleared, encouraging futures traders to rebuild long leverage. When the Nasdaq plunged 5.5% on Thursday, institutional risk desks cut exposure across both tech equities and digital assets simultaneously. Once cascading stop-losses cleared out over-leveraged longs near $75,000–$75,500, spot buyers stepped in on Friday as US tech stocks rebounded.
Why it matters for traders
- Bitcoin still trades like a high-beta tech asset during liquidity shocks. When the Nasdaq suffers a 5% day, crypto correlations with equities spike toward 1.0 in the short run.
- Liquidation flushes reset funding rates. Clearing $1.1 billion of crowded longs removes excess froth and often allows a cleaner spot-driven base to form.
- $75,000 is the line in the sand. Holding that psychological level twice in a week makes it the primary support reference for weekend traders.
What to watch
- Whether Bitcoin can reclaim and close above $77,000–$77,500 over the weekend to confirm a higher low.
- Open interest and perpetual funding rates across major derivatives venues.
