Brent Falls Sharply on the Week as Hormuz Reopening Hopes Outpace Actual Oil Flows

8 November 2026

Brent crude settled at roughly $98 a barrel on Friday 6 November, after falling sharply over the week. Sources disagree on the size of the weekly drop, with estimates ranging from about 12% to more than 16%, so read the exact number as approximate. Brent had briefly fallen below $100 on 4 November for the first time since late September, and it bounced back toward $100 after fresh incidents in the Strait of Hormuz.

What happened

The move was driven by hopes of a diplomatic arrangement that could reopen the strait to normal tanker traffic, and by the fading of fears of an immediate US strike on Iran. A Qatar-brokered plan reported in early November helped push prices lower. Yet tanker incidents, including vessels reportedly hit by mines, kept the supply-risk premium in the price. Analysts estimate the chance of renewed US strikes at around 60%, and say escalation could send Brent back toward $110 or higher. WTI settled near $91 on the same day.

Why it matters for traders

What to watch

The US October CPI release on Tuesday 10 November is the main macro event. Watch the Hormuz headlines closely, since any confirmed reopening or new tanker incident can move Brent by several dollars in a session. Gold will react to CPI and to any change in dollar strength.
