Brent Crude Reclaims $100 on Hormuz Tanker Nerves Still Heads for a 12% Weekly Drop
Crude oil capped one of its wildest weeks of 2026 on Friday, 6 November. After plunging from above $110 earlier in the week down to nearly $94 a barrel on hopes of US-Iran diplomatic talks, Brent crude rebounded on Friday to trade around $98 to $100.30. Even with Friday's bounce, Brent remained on track for a steep weekly decline of roughly 12%.
The late-week bounce was sparked by renewed physical supply nerves in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
What happened
Reports of commercial vessel incidents near the Strait of Hormuz, alongside Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refining infrastructure, reminded energy traders that physical supply disruptions remain a live risk even as diplomatic backchannels open. Short-sellers who had ridden the mid-week drop from $108 to $94 covered positions ahead of the weekend, pushing Brent back to the $100 psychological mark.
Why it matters for traders
- $100 Brent is the global macro fulcrum. Below $100, oil-importing markets like India, Pakistan and Europe breathe a sigh of relief; above $105–$110, inflation fears return quickly.
- Headline-driven markets require wider stops. In a week where crude swings $14 barrel-to-barrel on diplomacy versus tanker news, tight intraday stops get hunted easily.
- Energy equities lag spot whipsaws. Oil marketing and aviation stocks in Asia rallied hard on the mid-week plunge and now watch whether $100 acts as a ceiling.
What to watch
- Scheduled US-Iran diplomatic signals next week (10–11 November) versus weekend shipping updates in the Gulf.
- Whether Brent settles sustainably below $100 or re-establishes a $100–$105 range.
