Dow Jumps 3% to 53,356 as Midterm Results Clear the Political Fog

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped about 1,570 points, or roughly 3%, to close near 53,356 on Wednesday, 4 November. It was the index's best session since April 2025. The S&P 500 rose about 1.6% to near 7,689, its strongest day since August, and the Nasdaq Composite gained about 1.4% to around 25,737. The rally followed a clear outcome in the US midterm elections, which left Democrats in control of Congress and removed a source of uncertainty that had weighed on markets all week.

What happened

Investors had spent the previous sessions positioning cautiously. Tuesday's session was mixed, with the S&P 500 edging up to break a three-day losing run while the Dow dipped. Futures fell sharply on Tuesday night as early returns came in, but the market reversed on Wednesday once the results were clear and the outcome was accepted.

Falling oil added to the move. Crude prices have dropped sharply on hopes of US-Iran talks, which eases inflation worries and jet fuel costs. Airline, travel and consumer stocks benefited, while energy names lagged.

Figures differ slightly across outlets, because data providers snapshot the close at different times. CNBC's closing numbers are used here as the reference, and other sources showed moves within a few tenths of a percentage point of these figures.

Why it matters for traders

• Event risk is gone, for now. Much of the week's caution was about the election. With the outcome known, the market can refocus on earnings and rates.
• Rotation is visible. The Dow rose faster than the Nasdaq, consistent with money moving out of high-multiple chip and AI names into industrials and value stocks.
• Oil is a second driver. A cheaper oil price helps both inflation expectations and corporate costs, so it supports a broad rally.
• A big up day is not a trend yet. One session after a choppy week can fade, so confirmation over the next few days matters.

What to watch

Watch whether the S&P 500 holds above its recent support near 7,580, which was tested earlier in the week. Upcoming jobs data and Nvidia's results later this month are the next big tests for the AI trade. Keep an eye on Treasury yields as well, because higher long-term rates have been pressuring high-valuation tech stocks.
