Ethereum Drops 7% Toward $2,230 as the Crypto Fear & Greed Index Retreats to 28 ('Fear')
Ethereum bore the brunt of the late-week crypto pullback, falling more than 7% to trade around the $2,230–$2,240 zone on 6 November while total cryptocurrency market capitalisation contracted 4.9% to roughly $2.65 trillion. Sentiment gauges cooled rapidly, with the Crypto Fear & Greed Index dropping back into the 'Fear' zone at 28.
Across the broader altcoin market, high-beta Layer-1 and AI-linked tokens posted steeper losses of 8% to 12% as traders rotated into stablecoins or Bitcoin.
What happened
Combined pressure from ~$100 million in daily US spot Ether ETF redemptions and unwinding of leveraged ETH/USD futures pushed Ether below its mid-week support near $2,380. Furthermore, because several decentralized compute and AI-adjacent tokens sit within the Ethereum and Solana ecosystems, Thursday's Wall Street AI hardware selloff spilled directly into altcoin valuations.
Why it matters for traders
- Altcoins amplify Bitcoin's moves in both directions. A 6% dip in Bitcoin regularly translates into a 7%–12% drawdown in Ether and mid-cap tokens when liquidity tightens.
- Fear readings below 30 often mark short-term exhaustion. While 'Fear' is not an automatic buy signal, historically it indicates that much of the panic selling has already taken place.
- Watch the ETH/BTC ratio. Until Ethereum stops making lower lows against Bitcoin, BTC remains the lower-volatility vehicle for directional long trades.
What to watch
- Whether Ether holds the $2,200 psychological support over the weekend.
- On-chain gas fees and Layer-2 activity as volatility settles.
