Fed December Hike Bets Stay High as Markets Price a Large Chance of a Rate Rise
The Federal Reserve kept its benchmark rate in a range of 3.75% to 4.00% at its latest meeting, but the vote was split 10 to 2 with hawkish dissents. Since then, futures markets have continued to price a large probability of a rate increase at the central bank's 8–9 December meeting. Estimates vary by source and by the day they are taken, but they sit in a range of roughly 70% to above 80%, which is high for a policy move that the Fed has not yet signalled.
What happened
The Fed's hold was not a neutral pause. Two members voted for a hike, and the decision came as resilient economic data, including a solid third-quarter GDP reading, kept inflation a concern. Policymakers have stressed that persistent service-sector inflation and firm energy costs leave the door open to tightening.
Oil's fall this week has eased some of that pressure. Brent crude dropped toward around $104 a barrel after hopes for US-Iran talks grew, and lower energy prices reduce headline inflation. Even so, traders have not removed the December hike from their models. Market-implied odds have stayed high because core inflation has not clearly turned lower.
The sources cited here differ on the exact probability, so this article uses a range rather than a single figure.
Why it matters for traders
- Rates drive valuations. Higher expected rates lower the present value of future earnings, which hits high-multiple growth stocks hardest.
- Yields are the transmission channel. The 30-year Treasury yield has fallen this week as oil dropped, but the front end of the curve still prices tightening.
- A hold is not a cut. Markets that were hoping for easing are being repriced toward a possible hike, a shift that matters for bond, currency and gold positioning.
- Data will move the odds quickly. Payrolls and inflation prints can swing the probability sharply in a few sessions.
What to watch
The next major data releases on jobs and inflation will decide whether the December hike becomes the base case. Watch the 10-year Treasury yield, which has been hovering near 5%, and any change in Fed speak in the coming weeks. Oil's direction will also feed into the inflation outlook.
