Gold Reclaims $4,000 as Oil Plunges to a Three-Month Low on US-Iran Talk Hopes
Spot gold rose more than 3% to about $4,060 an ounce on 4 November, reclaiming the key $4,000 level. The move came as WTI crude fell more than 9% in one session, touching a three-month low near $88 a barrel. Gold had hit a one-year low of about $3,870 at the end of October, so the rebound has been sharp.
The two moves are linked. Oil prices have been a major driver of inflation expectations this year, and when crude falls, the case for further interest-rate increases weakens. Lower yields and a softer dollar, which both followed the oil decline, made non-yielding assets such as gold more attractive.
What happened
Diplomacy was the immediate catalyst. Hopes of progress in US-Iran talks, and the outcome of the US midterm elections, shifted the outlook for energy and central-bank policy at the same time. Oil had been trading above $100 a barrel in early November, so the fall represents a significant change in energy markets within a few sessions. Gold, meanwhile, remains well below its January record, which was near $5,600.
The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.75%–4.00%, but policymakers were divided, and some have argued for higher rates to fight inflation. Markets still price a substantial chance of a hike at the 8–9 December meeting. That keeps gold sensitive to every new piece of inflation data.
Why it matters for traders
- Oil and gold can move together when rates are the link. Falling crude can lower inflation fears, which reduces pressure on yields and supports gold. The link breaks if the dollar strengthens for other reasons.
- Gold has been volatile around $4,000. A move of 3% in a day is large for the metal, so position sizes should reflect the swings.
- Oil is headline-driven. A diplomatic setback can reverse the decline quickly, so energy trades are especially sensitive to news flow.
- A hawkish Fed would weigh on gold. A firm signal of a December rate increase would be likely to push gold lower again.
What to watch
- Whether gold holds above $4,000 or falls back toward the $3,870 low.
- US-Iran talks in Abu Dhabi scheduled for 10–11 November, which could move oil again.
- Fed commentary and the December meeting outlook, which shape how gold and oil react to the data.
