Italian Banks Lead Milan Higher as ECB Signals More Hikes May Come
Banks Carry the FTSE MIB
Italian lenders led Milan's gains on 2 November 2026:
- UniCredit: +1.3%
- Intesa Sanpaolo: +0.7%
- FinecoBank: +1.6%
The ECB angle
The ECB raised rates twice and then held on 29 October. Policymaker Peter Kažimír said: "The question is increasingly not if further ECB action is needed but how much." Traders reportedly expect two to three more ECB hikes over the next year.
Why higher rates help banks
Banks earn the gap between what they charge borrowers and what they pay savers. Higher rates usually widen that gap, at least until loan demand or credit quality suffers.
Why it matters for Milan
Banks are among the biggest weights in the FTSE MIB, so the index often follows them.
