KSE-100 Jumps 2.4% to 172,000 as Institutional Buying and Midterm Relief Lift PSX
The KSE-100 index closed at about 172,013 points on Wednesday, 4 November, a gain of roughly 3,995 points or 2.4% from the previous session's close near 168,019. It was one of the strongest single-day moves on the Pakistan Stock Exchange in recent weeks, and it came after a volatile start to the week in which the index swung by more than 1,400 points intraday on 3 November before closing higher.
What happened
Breadth was strong. Of the 499 companies that traded in the ready market, 368 advanced, 103 declined and 28 were unchanged. Trading volume rose to about 842 million shares from roughly 517 million in the prior session, which points to genuine participation rather than a thin rebound. Analysts quoted in local press credited institutional buying, particularly from mutual funds, for much of the move.
Two external factors framed the rally. The first was relief after the US midterm elections, which removed a source of uncertainty for global risk assets. The second was the sharp fall in crude oil prices on hopes of US-Iran talks. Because Pakistan is a large importer of energy, cheaper oil eases pressure on the external account and on the rupee, and that makes local equities more attractive to domestic and foreign investors alike.
Reports differ slightly on the exact closing level and rounding, so the figures above are given as approximate.
Why it matters for traders
- Energy costs drive sentiment. Oil-linked worries have dominated the PSX for weeks, so a lower crude price is often the first thing the market reacts to.
- Volume confirms the move. A jump of more than 60% in traded shares suggests the rally drew in new buyers, though one strong session is not yet a trend.
- Leadership matters. Broad gains across hundreds of stocks are healthier than a rally led by a few names, which is a useful test to apply on the next few sessions.
- Volatility cuts both ways. The index moved more than 1,400 points intraday on 3 November, so stop-losses and position size are essential in this market.
What to watch
The key question is whether the KSE-100 can hold gains above the 170,000 level that has acted as a reference point in recent weeks. Watch the next steps in US-Iran diplomacy, since any reversal in oil could quickly undo the move. Keep an eye on the State Bank of Pakistan's policy stance and on the rupee, which both influence how far domestic investors are willing to commit to equities.
