Nifty Oil & Gas Index Jumps Nearly 6% as Crude Slides on US-Iran Talk Hopes
Oil & Gas Stocks Lead the Rally
India's energy stocks were the standout on Monday, 2 November 2026. The Nifty Oil & Gas index surged 5.95%, the best sector of the day, as global crude prices fell sharply on hopes of progress in US-Iran peace talks.
The move carried the wider market: the Sensex rose 1,233.25 points (1.66%) to 75,692.78 and the Nifty 50 gained 387.70 points to 23,440.80, the third gain in a row. Reports put the one-day increase in BSE-listed market capitalisation at roughly ₹8 lakh crore.
Why cheaper oil helps India
- India imports most of its crude, so lower prices ease the import bill and pressure on the rupee.
- Oil marketing companies earn better margins when crude falls faster than pump prices.
- Lower fuel costs feed through to inflation expectations, which supports equities broadly.
What to watch
Crude has swung violently with every headline from the Middle East. A breakdown in talks could reverse the move just as fast.
