Nifty and Sensex Post Their Strongest Weekly Gain in Over a Year on Foreign Buying

8 November 2026

Indian benchmarks finished the week of 2 to 6 November with their strongest weekly gain in more than a year. Reports put net foreign institutional buying at roughly ₹46,000 crore for the period, a sharp turnaround from the net selling seen through October. On Friday the Sensex was reported near 81,000 and the Nifty 50 back above 25,000. Data providers disagree on the exact closing levels, so read the index figures as approximate.

What happened

Friday's session was a relief after Thursday's global tech sell-off, when chip stocks dragged Wall Street and Asian markets lower. Dalal Street did not follow the US tumble. Metals, autos and banks led the gains, and Mahindra & Mahindra jumped more than 5% on strong quarterly execution. Foreign investors were the main engine of the move. Domestic institutions were net sellers over the same stretch, which means local funds did not chase the rally and foreign money set the direction.

Why it matters for traders

What to watch

The Samvat 2083 Muhurat trading session on Sunday, 8 November, is a one-hour ceremonial window and usually has limited signal value. The more important tests come next week: the remaining Q2 earnings, the trend in foreign flows, and crude oil. Keep an eye on whether the Nifty holds its recent recovery level or slips back below it.
