Pakistan's October Trade Deficit Widens to $3.9 Billion as Imports Climb to $6.8 Billion
Fresh trade figures showing Pakistan's monthly trade deficit widening to roughly $3.9 billion in October—as imports rose to around $6.8 billion—gave equity investors a reason to pause on Friday after a steep multi-day rally on the Pakistan Stock Exchange.
While easing global crude oil prices earlier in the week had sparked hopes of a lighter energy import bill in November and December, the October print reminded markets that external-account pressures have not disappeared.
What happened
A pickup in industrial and commodity import volumes pushed monthly imports higher, outpacing export growth. Brokerage desks noted that the wider deficit, combined with an upcoming holiday break, prompted cautious funds to lock in gains in rate-sensitive and import-exposed sectors after the KSE-100 had rallied nearly 9,000 points from its late-October lows.
Why it matters for traders
- The trade balance feeds directly into rupee and rate expectations. A wider trade gap can slow the pace of future State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) monetary easing if pressure builds on foreign exchange reserves.
- Lower November crude is the key offset. Because oil is Pakistan's single largest import item, November's pullback in Brent crude toward $98–$100 could help narrow the deficit in next month's reading.
- Export-oriented sectors react differently from importers. Textile and IT exporters tend to hold up better when external deficit worries resurface.
What to watch
- Weekly SBP foreign exchange reserve updates and workers' remittance inflows.
- Whether Brent crude stays near or below $100 a barrel through mid-November.
- Commentary from IMF and Finance Ministry officials on external financing targets.
