PSX Ready Volume Surges 48% to 1.48 Billion Shares Even as Traded Value Halves to Rs22.6 Billion
Friday's session on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) produced an unusual divergence between share volume and rupee turnover. Total ready-market volume surged 48% to 1.48 billion shares—up from roughly 999 million shares on Thursday—yet total traded value fell by more than half, from Rs46.06 billion to Rs22.57 billion.
Total market capitalisation slipped by about Rs203 billion to settle at Rs18.909 trillion.
What happened
The divergence happened because institutional players stepped back from high-priced index heavyweights in banks, oil and fertilizers, while retail traders crowded into low-priced penny and third-tier scrips such as Bawany Air rights and WorldCall Telecom (WTL). When billions of shares change hands at a few rupees apiece, headline share volume spikes even as actual capital deployed shrinks.
Why it matters for traders
- Always check rupee value alongside share volume. Rising share volume paired with falling traded value is a classic sign of speculative retail churn in small-caps rather than institutional accumulation.
- Low-priced volume leaders carry sharp reversal risk. Third-tier stocks often rally late in a bull wave and can drop fast when liquidity dries up.
- Blue-chip pauses on lower value are healthier than high-value selloffs. Because Friday's dip in heavyweights came on half the previous day's rupee turnover, it signalled light profit-booking rather than aggressive institutional exit.
What to watch
- Whether rupee turnover expands back above Rs35–40 billion when index heavyweights resume leadership.
- Relative volume between KSE-100 blue chips and third-tier speculative names next week.
