India's November 12 Inflation Print Could Revive RBI Rate-Hike Bets
The Reserve Bank of India raised the repo rate by 25 basis points to 5.50% on 7 October, its first hike in nearly three years, and cited an inflation projection of about 5.2%. Now the market's attention has moved to India's consumer price data, due on 12 November. A hotter-than-expected print could bring another rate increase back into the conversation sooner than the central bank has signalled.
What happened
Economists and bank research notes have started to shift. One Wells Fargo note expects India's inflation to accelerate and has moved its expected RBI hike forward to December. Other analysts are more cautious and point to softer crude prices as a brake on imported inflation. The RBI has also been buying dollars to slow rupee appreciation, which adds a further complication for policy.
Why it matters for traders
- Rate-sensitive sectors such as real estate, autos and non-bank lenders tend to react first when hike expectations rise. Banks can cut both ways: higher rates lift margins but can also slow loan growth.
- A soft CPI print would reinforce the view that the October hike was enough. That would help duration-sensitive stocks and support the rally in foreign flows.
- Crude prices feed directly into India's inflation outlook. Brent has fallen sharply from its recent highs, which is the main reason inflation fears have eased.
- Rupee moves matter too. The RBI's dollar buying shows it is managing currency strength alongside inflation.
What to watch
Mark 12 November on your calendar. Watch the headline CPI and the food component, since food prices often drive surprises in India. Compare the print with the market's expectation rather than the prior month. Also track the next RBI policy meeting date, and whether the rupee and bond yields move in the same direction.
