US Dollar and Treasury Yields Find Footing on 165,000 Jobs Beat After Post-Midterm Slide
The US Dollar Index (DXY) and US Treasury yields stabilised on Friday, 6 November, recovering part of their mid-week losses after the October US employment report came in stronger than expected. With US employers adding 165,000 jobs and the unemployment rate ticking down to 4.1%, currency and bond desks scaled back expectations of near-term Federal Reserve dovishness.
Earlier in the week, the dollar had slipped to a more-than-one-month low after the US midterm elections produced a divided government setup.
What happened
Mid-week, global macro funds sold the dollar and bought sovereign bonds on the view that a Democratic Congress would constrain fiscal deficits and tariff escalation. Friday's hard labour data shifted the focus back to central bank fundamentals: with the US economy growing at roughly a 3.4% pace and unemployment near 4%, the Fed has little reason to rush rate cuts—and markets still price a meaningful chance of further tightening if inflation stays sticky.
Why it matters for traders
- The Dollar Index drives emerging-market and commodity flows. A softer DXY mid-week helped gold surge past $4,100 and supported FII inflows into India; a rebounding dollar can slow those tailwinds.
- Political trades fade when hard data arrives. Election-week knee-jerk moves in currencies often mean-revert once payrolls and inflation numbers hit the tape.
- Rate differentials favour the greenback. As long as US growth outpaces Europe's, dips in the dollar attract yield-seeking buyers.
What to watch
- Next week's US Consumer Price Index (CPI) release, the next major catalyst for DXY and global yields.
- EUR/USD and USD/INR reactions around key moving averages.
