US Adds 165,000 Jobs in October and Unemployment Dips to 4.1%, Complicating the Fed's Path
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday, 6 November, that nonfarm payrolls increased by 165,000 in October, comfortably beating consensus forecasts, while the unemployment rate edged down to 4.1%. The strong labour reading confirmed that the US economy continues to expand at a healthy clip, but it also pushed Treasury yields higher on fears that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates restrictive.
Equity traders had to balance the good news of resilient employment against the headwind of higher borrowing costs.
What happened
Job gains were led by healthcare, professional services and hospitality, offsetting pockets of manufacturing softness. Because inflation expectations have remained sensitive to energy swings and wage growth, bond traders quickly trimmed bets on any near-term Fed easing and kept elevated odds on the table for a hawkish December FOMC stance. Rate-sensitive real estate and utility stocks lagged on the day, while cash-rich mega-cap tech names shrugged off higher yields to bounce from Thursday's oversold levels.
Why it matters for traders
- "Good economic news" can be mixed news for stocks when rates are high. A tight labour market supports corporate revenues but removes the urgency for central bank rate cuts.
- Watch the 10-year Treasury yield. Whenever strong jobs data pushes yields higher, high-debt smallcaps and utilities tend to underperform mega-cap companies with strong free cash flow.
- Macro data sets the floor for the US dollar. The jobs beat helped the Dollar Index (DXY) stabilise after its post-election dip.
What to watch
- Next week's US CPI and PPI inflation prints, which will be the final major inputs before the December Fed meeting.
- Speeches from Federal Reserve governors reacting to the 4.1% unemployment reading.
