Wall Street Weekly Wrap: S&P 500 Sheds 2.7% as Defensive Value Outperforms High-Beta Tech
A week that began with a post-election relief rally on Wednesday ended in the red across all three major US benchmarks. By Friday's closing bell on 6 November, the S&P 500 stood at 7,376.86 (-2.7% on the week), the Nasdaq Composite at 24,579.42 (-3.4%), and the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 51,285.73 (-0.9%).
The 2.5-percentage-point weekly performance gap between the Dow and the Nasdaq underscored how quickly portfolio managers rotated toward lower-multiple value stocks when volatility spiked.
What happened
Wednesday's post-midterm jump gave way to Thursday's broad de-risking as crowded momentum trades in technology, crypto-linked equities and high-multiple growth names unwound simultaneously. Healthcare, traditional banks and consumer staples held up far better than the headline index, cushioning the Dow's weekly decline even as Friday saw a modest rotation back into semiconductors.
Why it matters for traders
- Crowded trades exit through the same door. When positioning is heavily concentrated in one theme, a macro catalyst can trigger a sharp multi-standard-deviation unwind in 24 hours.
- Portfolio balance reduces drawdown. Traders holding a mix of defensive value and growth weathered Thursday's 4.4% S&P drop with much smaller swings.
- Watch weekly support levels. The S&P 500 defending the 7,300–7,350 area into Friday's close gives bulls a clear reference line for next week.
What to watch
- Whether the S&P 500 stays above 7,350 at Monday's open.
- Volatility Index (VIX) behaviour—a drop back below 18–20 would signal calming institutional nerves.
